Tough Loss

Tough Loss

7 Feb 2019

A quick update since I last posted as the Reynard HNCC Premiers won Friday week ago against NOBM in the T20 before crashing back down to earth in a tough loss on Saturday against the top of the table Napier Tech. A crushing win over Marist as we kept our perfect T20 record in tact after knocking them over for 49 with Brad Schmulian (3 – 6) and Will Clark (4 -12) doing the damage before Brad (31no) and Harry Young (18no) knocked the runs off without losing a wicket in a clinical display.

Saturdays game was a different scenario as Napier Tech opened up and before the rain came they had reached 189 for 1 off 41 overs so were in a pretty dominant position as the heavens opened. After being allowed to bat another over they finally posted 206/1 before the Duckworth/Lewis method was calculated and we were asked to get 256 in 42 overs which was always going to be a big ask at Anderson Park batting second!! After a shaky start Jono Whitley (65) and Brad Schmulian (47) posted an impressive 108 run partnership and at 133 – 3 in the 29th over we were at least in the hunt. Tech had other ideas and they came back strongly to knock the tail off and we were all out for 169 to lose by a fair margin. A really brave effort lads as the rain didn’t help us but they are also a class side so we will need to improve as we head towards the finals.

The HNCC Reynard Seniors have also won and lost in the last two weekends to end their chance at a finals appearance. After comfortably beating Sher E Punjab the week before with Alex Ryder (3- 20) and Chris Hicks (33no) starring they folded badly against NBHS on Saturday. With us bowling first NBHS were able to post 241/7 in the 45 overs with only Sam Prescott (3 – 31) and Ben Taylor (3 – 51) able to make any inroads. We didn’t show a lot of resistance in reply as only Oscar Crichton (39) made it past 20 as we were all out for 128. A disappointing day lads but we haven’t quite been consistent enough all season to deserve a final spot but lots of young talent to be excited about and will be good to finish on a high this weekend.

The Reynard HNCC Division 2 side also had a loss the week before last as they went down to Cornwall. A superb bowling effort from Sophie Pyott (6 -33) was not enough to get over the line as Andy Reeves (56) and Rogan Ross (46) were the only ones to show some fight as we fell 50 odd runs short of the total of 197. Unfortunately the rain on Saturday curtailed any result so looking forward to this week.

The Cape Physio Women’s side have been going  extremely well and are into the final this Friday Night against Marist at Anderson Park. Superbly led by Sophie Pyott and with young stars like Flora Devonshire and Margot Schoular they will be hard to beat tomorrow night.

This week’s games:

HNCC Reynard Seniors vs St Johns at Anderson Park on Saturday from 12.45pm

HNCC Reynard Division 2 vs  NOBM at Nelson Park on Saturday from 1.00pm

HNCC Parker Earthmover 3rds vs CHB at Onga Onga on Saturday from 1.30pm.

HNCC Cape Physio Womens vs NOBM at Anderson Park on Friday Night at 5.30pm in the FINAL.

No Game for the Premiers this week but the Women’s final should be well worth a look as the clubrooms will be open and a free BBQ from around 5. In other news great to see Harry Young make his debut for the Hawkes Bay Senior side after some great performances for the Mavericks and he had an inspired debut with 59 runs opening the batting. Brad Schmulian continued his fine form with another century and captained the side to an easy win against Wairarapa.

The cricket Camps finished up with our two Year 6 teams proving very competitive and some outstanding performances over the 3 days with M Innes especially consistent with scores of 32, 34 and 35 of which 2 were retired and runs from W Lovatt (35), J Hinton (33no), B Moriaty (31 ret) and S Hill (30 ret) shows the Awesome talent that’s coming through the club.
