Meeting and Question Session

Meeting and Question Session

23 Jul 2019

At Anderson Park Clubrooms

On Thursday 1st August 2019

At 6.30pm.

I have had a good number of people talking to me and showing interest in the tour and I have made enquiries over flights and accommodation. It is getting very close to the time to decide whether the tour is viable and the need for a commitment.

This evening will be an opportunity for questions and the first chance to see who is ready to commit to coming.

If you are interested in the tour please try and come to the meeting, but if you can’t come to the meeting but are still interested, please contact me asap.

There is a brief booklet on the tour summary below.

I hope to see you next week.

Havelock North Cricket Club is planning to the UK for a cricket tour in July 2020

East Kent is the ideal base from which to play cricket and offers the opportunity for a variety of excursions being approximately 2 hours from London.

The idea for this tour comes from the Chairman Andy Reeves who is English. He played cricket for the UK host club of St Lawrence and Highland Court for 30 years, which is just outside Canterbury in East Kent. In 2015 both the St Lawrence 1st XI Captain (Will Hilton) and the Ladies 1st XI Captain (Anna Healey) came over and played for HNCC. In the past 3 years Grahame Tryon and Sophie Pyott (2 years) have reciprocated and played for St Lawrence. Andy took a very successful tour with the HNHS 1st XI over to East Kent in 2017 and is now hoping to take a mixed club squad to continue to grow the bond between the clubs and regions.

The proposed tour dates are from Wednesday 1st July to Wednesday 22nd July 2020. as flights are yet to be confirmed. This would give the squad 3 weekends in the UK over the 2 weeks of school holiday and require a couple of days off school at either end of the trip. A group bbooking would allow members to book to return earlier if necessary, but would need everyone to travel out on the same flight.

The tour party will be collected at Heathrow airport by a coach company and taken to our base. This is Kingsdown Chalets which is a self-catering resort by the British channel coast which includes an indoor swimming pool and various outdoor facilities. http://www.kingsdownholidays.co.uk/

The village of Kingsdown is on the coast and within a 5 minute walk of the chalets there are 3 fine typically English pubs that do good selection of beers and do excellent food. A small corner store and post office is the only shop in the village but the seaside town of Deal is a 5 minute drive and contains all the facilities you would expect from a smalll town including several supermarkets. The historic port of Dover with it’s well preserved Norman Castle is a 10 miniute drive.and Highland

Court is the home playing ground for St Lawrence and Highland Court, is a 25 minute drive from Kingston.

The plan is to hire two small minibuses during our stay although this may be reviewed if a number of players hire a car. We will be taken back to Heathrow by a transport company.

The intention is to play between 6 and 8 games of cricket. This will include games against local clubs and may include some late starts and shorter format games, remembering that the days will remain light until 9pm.

The exact itinerary and fixtures will be confirmed nearer the time.

St Lawrence and Highland Court Cricket Ground

In between game days there are a number of local towns and places of interest to visit. The historic cathedral city of Canterbury is only 30 minutes away from our accommodation and I hope at least on one day we will have some county cricket to watch at St Lawrence the county cricket ground.

Between games excursions could be planned one of which could be a day trip to London including a tour of Lords Cricket Ground.

Another possibility is a day trip to Leeds Castle a famous Elizabethan castle with extensive grounds.

This time of year is the domestic 20/20 season and we will hopefully be able to watch the Kent Spitfires play at St Lawrence and Highland Court’s original ground St Lawrence County Cricket Ground.
